Your Fitness Is Compounding

Imagine you invested R10,000.

It performed incredibly well.

Year after year, that investment grew.

R10,000 became R20,000.

R20,000 became R40,000.

You had clear evidence that what you were doing was working.

Then one day, you got bored.

You wanted more control over your money, so you pulled it out of the investment that had been producing great returns and put it somewhere earning almost nothing.

The investment was still working.

You simply stopped appreciating the returns.

I see something very similar happen with training.

Training is an investment

When you first start training, you invest an hour.

Then another hour.

Then another.

You follow the program.

You listen to your coaches.

You work on your weaknesses.

You do the strength work.

You build your engine.

You squat when you would probably rather bench. 😂

You do the running when you would probably rather lift.

You learn when to push and when to back off.

You show up on the days when motivation is nowhere to be found.

And slowly, those investments start compounding.

You get stronger.

You get fitter.

You move better.

You recover better.

You can run further.

You lift weights that once seemed impossible.

Things that used to leave you lying on the floor suddenly become manageable.

You become more confident in what your body can do.

Maybe you enter your first competition, HYROX or running event.

Maybe everyday life simply becomes easier.

That’s your return.

And the longer you train consistently, the more obvious those returns become.

Then something interesting happens

You become experienced.

You understand training better.

You know what you like.

You know what you’re good at.

And sometimes that creates a temptation to start changing the very things that helped you make progress.

You start choosing more of the training you enjoy.

You do less of the stuff you struggle with.

You add extra volume because more feels like it should produce faster results.

You push harder because you feel fit enough to handle it.

You skip recovery.

You train around little niggles.

You start coaching yourself.

The balanced structure that was quietly helping you progress begins to disappear.

And sometimes the returns start slowing down too.

The boring stuff was doing more than you realised

A good training program won’t give you your favourite movements every day.

Some weeks you’ll love it.

Some days you’ll look at the board and wonder who upset the coaches. 😂

That’s part of training.

There will be strength work you need.

Aerobic work you need.

Movement practice you need.

Recovery you need.

There will be weaknesses that need attention.

There will also be times when your coach tells you to slow down, reduce the load, change a movement or take something out.

All of those things are part of the investment.

Good programming is designed around the bigger picture.

One workout is just one workout.

Over hundreds of workouts, the balance matters.

Protect the investment you’ve already made

If you’ve spent years building your fitness, there are a few simple things you can do to keep those returns compounding.

1. Book regular Goal-Setting Sessions

Sit down with your coach and talk.

Where are you now?

What are you trying to achieve?

What’s going well?

Where are you struggling?

Has your goal changed?

Your training should have direction, and sometimes a simple conversation can help you see things you’ve missed.

2. Stay coachable

The fitter and more experienced you become, the more valuable this can be.

Keep asking questions.

Listen to feedback.

Allow someone else to watch how you’re moving and training.

A coach can often see things from the outside that are difficult to recognise yourself.

3. Keep doing the things you wouldn’t choose yourself

We naturally gravitate towards things we’re good at.

If you love lifting, you’ll probably choose to lift.

If you love running, you’ll probably choose to run.

If you love going hard, you’ll probably choose workouts that let you go hard.

A balanced program regularly asks you to work outside those preferences.

That’s valuable.

Your weaknesses need investment too.

4. Talk to your coach before adding more

When you’re getting fitter, it’s easy to think the answer is another session, another run, another lifting program or another piece of accessory work.

More training creates more recovery demands.

Before adding something, speak to your coach.

Sometimes extra work makes sense.

Sometimes the better investment is sleep, food, mobility or recovery.

5. Deal with niggles early

Small problems have a habit of becoming bigger when we continually work around them.

Tell your coach.

Modify where necessary.

Get the right professional involved when needed.

Then work towards addressing the reason something keeps bothering you.

Playing the long game matters.

6. Look at your returns

Every now and then, look backwards.

What could you do two years ago?

What can you do now?

How much stronger are you?

How has your engine improved?

How do you move?

How has your confidence changed?

What can you do outside the gym because of the work you’ve put in inside the gym?

Progress becomes easy to overlook when you’re living with it every day.

Don’t mistake boredom for something no longer working

Training doesn’t always need to feel exciting.

Consistency can feel ordinary.

Following a program can feel repetitive.

Doing the basics again and again can feel boring.

But those ordinary sessions are often the ones quietly building your fitness.

So if you’re stronger, fitter and healthier than you were a year or two ago, ask yourself:

What actually got me here?

Look at the habits.

Look at the consistency.

Look at the coaching.

Look at the programming.

Look at the things you’ve done hundreds of times when nobody was watching.

Those are the investments that produced the returns you’re enjoying today.

Keep making them.

Your fitness is compounding.

And we want those returns to keep paying you for the rest of your life.
