One of the questions I get asked quite often is,
“Coach, why do we do goal-setting sessions?”
Most people assume it’s because we want to set a target.
Lose 10kg.
Do your first pull-up.
Run a HYROX.
Complete your first CrossFit Open.
Those things are great.
But if I’m honest…
Goal-setting sessions aren’t really about goals.
They’re about people.
We Don’t Want You Going Through the Motions
One of the biggest challenges with any fitness journey is that life doesn’t stop.
Work gets busy.
The kids need more of your attention.
Stress increases.
Routine changes.
Before you know it, you’re just turning up to the gym and going through the motions.
You still come to class.
You still do the workout.
But you’re no longer moving towards something meaningful.
That’s where a goal-setting session helps.
It gives us the opportunity to stop.
Reflect.
Celebrate what’s going well.
Talk honestly about what’s challenging you.
And make sure we’re still heading in the right direction.
Natasha’s Story
One member who immediately comes to mind is Natasha.
A few years ago, we sat down for a goal-setting session.
She was frustrated.
She felt stuck.
Her weight was at its highest.
Her mental health wasn’t in a great place.
Like so many people, she felt as though she was trying without really making progress.
Instead of giving her a stricter diet or telling her to train more, we started talking.
What did she actually enjoy?
What excited her?
One thing became obvious.
Running was something she avoided.
So I challenged her.
“What if we stopped avoiding it and started improving it?”
The first goal was simple.
Complete a Parkrun.
That was it.
One small goal.
That one decision changed everything.
She discovered she actually enjoyed running.
One Parkrun became another.
Then another.
Today she’s training for her first marathon.
Her nutrition improved because she wanted to fuel her running.
Her CrossFit improved.
Her weightlifting improved.
She lost over 10% body fat.
Most importantly…
She became a healthier, happier person.
That didn’t happen because of one goal.
It happened because we found something meaningful to work towards.
Accountability Changes Everything
One of the biggest reasons people struggle isn’t because they don’t know what to do.
They simply don’t have anyone checking in.
Someone asking,
“How’s training going?”
“What’s been difficult lately?”
“What can we change?”
That’s what a goal-setting session gives you.
Someone in your corner.
Someone helping you adjust the plan when life changes.
Someone reminding you why you started.
Because sometimes we all need that conversation.
Small Changes Beat Big Overhauls
One mistake people often make is thinking they need to change everything.
Train six days a week.
Completely overhaul their diet.
Wake up at 4 am.
Cut out every food they enjoy.
That rarely lasts.
Instead, we look for one or two things that will make the biggest difference.
Maybe it’s attending three classes consistently every week.
Maybe it’s adding one walk after dinner.
Maybe it’s eating more protein.
Maybe it’s finally working on those double unders you’ve been avoiding.
Small changes.
Done consistently.
Lead to big results.
Every Member Needs One
Goal-setting sessions aren’t just for new members.
They’re not just for people who are struggling.
They’re for everyone.
Even if you’ve been training with us for five years.
Life changes.
Goals change.
Priorities change.
The conversation helps us stay connected and helps us continue building a plan that fits where you are right now.
That’s what coaching should look like.
What We’ll Talk About
If you’ve never booked a goal-setting session, here’s what you can expect.
We’ll chat about:
• What’s going well.
• What you’re finding difficult.
• Whether you’re happy with your progress.
• What you’d like to improve over the next few months.
• One or two practical habits that will help you get there.
Nothing complicated.
Just an honest conversation.
The Goal Isn’t the Goal
John Maxwell often says that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
I think coaching is exactly the same.
The goal-setting session isn’t really about writing goals on a piece of paper.
It’s about understanding you.
It’s about helping you navigate the different seasons of life.
It’s about keeping you accountable.
It’s about making sure you’re not trying to figure everything out on your own.
That’s what coaching is.
We’d Love to Help
If it’s been a while since your last goal-setting session, or you’ve never had one, let’s change that.
Book a session.
Let’s celebrate what’s going well.
Let’s work through what’s challenging you.
Let’s make a plan that fits your life.
Because sometimes one conversation is all it takes to completely change the direction of your journey.
